Life's Purpose

| July 20, 2024

I have managed to carve out a successful life for myself. I have been privileged to enjoy robust health throughout the prime years of my life, dedicating five long decades to making a name in finance. This fortunate streak, however, met an unexpected hurdle recently when a bladder infection blindsided me. Culminating in a couple of disturbing episodes where I succumbed to weakness and collapsed, this health crisis prompted my wife to call for immediate medical assistance.

My time at the hospital was marked by an extensive series of medical tests undertaken to pinpoint the origin of my health complications. Among the multitude of diagnostic procedures, I had to undergo several scans. In one such evocative instance, I vividly recollect lying on my back, clad in the impersonal expanse of a hospital robe, my gaze fixed on the intimidating silhouette of the scanning machine hovering above me. As I continued to look, my name caught my attention, decorated in gold and teeming with a sense of identity. Beneath it, my birthdate and a unique medical identifier echoed a sense of hard reality.

This sight triggered a powerful, unexpected revelation within me. Against the sterile hospital backdrop and surrounded by the humming machinery, I retreated into a deep introspection of my life journey. The conclusion I arrived at had no connection to my considerable financial assets, impressive net worth, or the consistent income stream to which I was accustomed. I realized that my true worth was not hedged in materialistic successes. Instead, it was rooted in the rich tapestry of experiences I had woven over the years and the positive impact I had on the lives of people around me.

In my society, it's common to encounter individuals with a zealous pursuit of accumulating wealth, maintaining a position in the spotlight, and striving to consolidate power. Yet, the realization that dawned upon me during my hospital stay sang a different tune. I discovered that what I deem God's greatest gift isn't bound by materialism or authority—it is the innate capability to share freely and give selflessly. This understanding shifted my perspective and left me with a renewed sense of purpose: not focused on self-gain but on our shared ability to contribute to the lives of others.
