Over the last 25 years, I’ve signed affidavits of support for four of my wife’s family members from Cuba. It took more than five years of paperwork, interviews, and waiting before they were finally approved to leave Cuba and come to the United States.
Once here, they followed every step required of them. They worked, learned the system, fulfilled their obligations, and eventually became U.S. citizens after being sworn in. Today, they’re contributing members of their communities with stable jobs and families of their own.
Our experience has taught us something simple: immigration works when people follow the rules. No one in our family is against immigration—far from it. We’ve lived it, supported it, and celebrated it. But when the process is ignored or bypassed, there are consequences, and that’s true for any country. Dana
